Flash Fiction: Little Rock | Friday Fictioneers Dec. 7, 2018
This is flash fiction, a 100-word story. In this week’s story, you’ll encounter young Russ and Uncle Walt, from last week’s story, “The New Girl,” and you meet the new girl herself, young Kassidy.
In my paranormal Urban fantasy novel They All Died Smiling, from the Reluctant Demon Hunter series, Kassidy tells her roommate Julie about the time Russ ran away to go to the city. Here’s the flash fiction version of that tale.

Wind flings fall’s last leaves.
“That boy picked a doozy of a day to run off.”
Kass twists her braids between trembling fingers.
Uncle Walt pats her leg. Rain gushes.
“You look hard. Gotta watch this storm.”
“I am.”
Half a tree flies past them. Walt brakes to miss it.
Thunder rumbles the world.
“There he is.”
“Where?”
“By the tracks, with a trash bag on his head.”
Kass runs up the hill to get him. “Russell, where do you think you’re going?”
She grabs his hand. He pulls away. “Little Rock.”
“Come on.” She drags him to Walt’s pickup.
