Hen In Snow

Talons

by Ronda Del Boccio

We instinctively feel the danger. We cackle and run under the nearest bush, tree or shelter where death cannot take us. From my hiding place, I look at the empty yard. Relief! Nobody will die today.

Peeping in the tall grass. The babies! I rush toward them, cover them with my body and wings.

Hawk soars down, down, down. Big sharp talons stretched to kill. I will give my life for the babies.

Heavy weight lands on me, flies away. I feel a harsh prick. Stunned, I cannot move. Peeping from below rouses me.

I live! Hawk hunts.
